Target Information
ASIC1 belongs to the degenerin/epithelial sodium channel (DEG/ENaC) superfamily. These are amiloride-sensitive sodium channels with intracellular N and C termini, two hydrophobic transmembrane regions, and a large extracellular loop rich in cysteine residues.
ASIC1 is expressed in most brain neurons and may function as an ion channel subunit. It is a cation channel gated by extracellular protons and inhibited by amiloride, permeable to Ca²⁺, Li⁺, and K⁺.
Expression is observed in dorsal root ganglia, sciatic nerves, olfactory bulb, cortical regions, hippocampus, amygdala, cerebellum, and other brain regions. Isoform 3 is expressed only in dorsal root ganglion, while isoform 1 is expressed in DRG, spinal cord, and trigeminal ganglia.
