Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and play a key role in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, in contrast to prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly in sequence and biochemical properties among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPS22 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein without a counterpart in prokaryotic or fungal mitochondrial ribosomes. It is located telomeric of and transcribed in the opposite direction from the forkhead box L2 gene. A pseudogene corresponding to MRPS22 is found on chromosome Xq.
