Beclin 1은 오토파지에서 중심적인 역할을 하는 단백질로, phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate 형성을 매개하는 PI3K 복합체의 핵심 서브유닛으로 작용합니다. 다양한 형태의 PI3K 복합체는 여러 막 수송 경로에 관여하며, PI3KC3-C1은 오토파고좀의 시작에, PI3KC3-C2는 오토파고좀의 성숙 및 엔도사이토시스에 관여합니다. 또한 Beclin 1은 항바이러스 숙주 방어에도 역할을 합니다.
