Target Information
ALDH1A1 belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family of proteins. This enzyme is the second in the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. Two major liver isoforms—cytosolic and mitochondrial—are distinguished by electrophoretic mobility, kinetic properties, and localization. Most Caucasians express both isoforms, while approximately 50% of Orientals express only the cytosolic form, lacking the mitochondrial isozyme. This difference may relate to the higher frequency of acute alcohol intoxication among Orientals.
