Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene contains a RING finger motif and is similar to polycomb group (PcG) gene products. PcG proteins form complexes via protein-protein interactions to maintain transcriptional repression of genes involved in embryogenesis, cell cycle regulation, and tumorigenesis. MEL18 acts as a negative regulator of transcription and exhibits tumor suppressor activity. Expression is detected in various tumor cells but limited in neural tissues under normal conditions. Knockout studies in mice suggest MEL18 may negatively regulate cytokine and chemokine expression, influencing lymphocyte differentiation, migration, and immune responses.
