Target Information
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptor proteins belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, mediating recognition and G protein–based signal transduction of odorant molecules. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature for these genes and proteins is organism-specific.
