Target Information

IRF3 (interferon regulatory factor 3) is a key transcriptional regulator of type I interferon (IFN)-dependent immune responses. It plays a critical role in the innate immune response against DNA and RNA viruses. IRF3 regulates transcription of type I IFN genes (IFN-alpha and IFN-beta) and IFN-stimulated genes (ISG) by binding to an interferon-stimulated response element (ISRE) in their promoters. It acts as a potent activator of the IFN-beta gene and is crucial in both early and late phases of IFNA/B gene induction. IRF3 is found inactive in the cytoplasm of uninfected cells and becomes phosphorylated upon viral infection or toll-like receptor signaling, leading to dimerization and nuclear localization. It associates with CREB binding protein to form DRAF1, which activates transcription of type I IFN and ISG genes. Mutations can result in acute infection-induced encephalopathy.
