Target Information
In vertebrates, there are four major glucose-phosphorylating isoenzymes: hexokinase I, II, III, and IV.
Hexokinase catalyzes the first step of glucose metabolism, phosphorylating glucose to form glucose-6-phosphate, committing it to the glycolytic pathway.
Hexokinase 2 (HK2) is the predominant isozyme in insulin-responsive tissues such as skeletal muscle.
Its expression is insulin-responsive, and studies in rats suggest HK2 contributes to the elevated glycolysis rate observed in rapidly growing cancer cells.
