Target Information

Voltage-sensitive calcium channels mediate calcium entry into excitable cells, playing a crucial role in neurotransmitter release and excitation–contraction (E-C) coupling.
The 1,4-dihydropyridines (DHPs) are synthetic organic compounds used to identify L-type calcium channels found in vertebrate muscle, neuronal, and neuroendocrine cells.
The DHP receptor, part of the L-type calcium channel complex, functions as the voltage sensor in E-C coupling and consists of multiple subunits:

  • Alpha-1 subunit: Contains the DHP binding site and shows high sequence homology to voltage-gated sodium channels.
  • Alpha-2 subunit: A glycoprotein highly expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscle and brain.
  • Beta and gamma subunits: Co-purify with the DHP receptor, contributing to channel structure and function.
