Target Information
The KRAS gene encodes the human cellular homolog of a transforming gene isolated from the Kirsten rat sarcoma virus. RAS proteins are GDP/GTP-binding proteins that act as intracellular signal transducers. The most well-studied members of the RAS gene family include KRAS, HRAS, and NRAS, which encode immunologically related proteins with a molecular mass of approximately 21 kDa. These proteins are homologs of rodent sarcoma virus genes that have transforming abilities.
Wildtype RAS proteins play essential roles in normal cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, and senescence. However, mutations in these genes can lead to oncogenic transformation and are implicated in various human cancers.
