Target Information
Polyamines are ubiquitous polycationic alkylamines such as spermine, spermidine, putrescine, and agmatine. These molecules participate in various cellular functions including cell cycle modulation, scavenging reactive oxygen species, and gene expression control. They also play key roles in neurotransmission through regulation of cell-surface receptor activity and intracellular signaling pathways.
The SMOX gene encodes an FAD-containing enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of spermine to spermidine, producing hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoenzymes have been identified, though some lack significant oxidase activity on natural polyamine substrates.
