Target Information
Glutamate receptors mediate most excitatory neurotransmission in the brain and play important roles in neural plasticity, development, and neurodegeneration. Ionotropic glutamate receptors are classified into NMDA and kainate/AMPA receptors, both functioning as glutamate-gated, cation-specific ion channels. Kainate/AMPA receptors, consisting of subunits GluR1–GluR7, are co-localized with NMDA receptors at many synapses and primarily mediate fast excitatory neurotransmission by glutamate. In contrast, NMDA receptors exhibit slower kinetics and higher Ca²⁺ permeability.
