Target Information
Aquaporins are membrane channels that facilitate water transport across cell membranes. Multiple isoforms (AQP0–AQP10) are found in mammals, often co-expressed within the same cell. While most aquaporins are selective for water, AQP3, AQP7, AQP9, and one AQP10 transcript also transport urea and glycerol. AQP2 is uniquely regulated by vasopressin for water reabsorption in kidney collecting ducts. Aquaporins play roles in renal water absorption, pulmonary secretion, lacrimation, and cerebrospinal fluid and aqueous humor regulation. In the lung, AQP5 mediates water transport across the apical membrane of type I alveolar epithelial cells.
