Blood-group antigens are molecules formed by sequential addition of saccharides to carbohydrate side chains of lipids and proteins found on erythrocytes and certain epithelial cells.
The A, B, and H antigens may be modulated during malignant transformation.
These carbohydrate determinants are carried on glycolipids and glycoproteins, often mucin-type, detected on erythrocytes, epithelial cells, and in secretions.
Sixteen genetically and biosynthetically distinct but interrelated specificities exist, including A, B, H, Lewis A, Lewis B, Lewis X, Lewis Y, and precursor type 1 chain antigens.
