Target Information
Cecropins are antimicrobial peptides first isolated from the hemolymph of Hyalophora cecropia, from which the term "cecropin" was derived. These peptides lyse bacterial cell membranes, inhibit proline uptake, and cause membrane leakage. They play a key role in the cell-free immune defense of insects.
Cecropins are small proteins of about 31–37 amino acids, active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Variants isolated from other insects have been named bactericidin, lepidopteran, sarcotoxin, etc., but all share structural similarity. Cecropin P1 from Sus scrofa (pig) also belongs to this family, along with Cecropin A and Cecropin B.
