With the addition of desired additives, it can be adapted for the cultivation of various bacteria.
Adding 6.5% sodium chloride makes it selective for isolating salt-tolerant bacteria such as Enterococci.
It is also used for preparing inocula for antimicrobial susceptibility tests.
