Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the phospholipase A2 (PLA2) family. PLA2s are a diverse group of enzymes differing in sequence, function, localization, and cation requirements. This gene product belongs to group II, which includes secreted forms of PLA2. These extracellular enzymes have low molecular mass and require calcium ions for catalysis. They hydrolyze the sn-2 fatty acid acyl ester bond of phosphoglycerides, releasing free fatty acids and lysophospholipids, and are thought to regulate phospholipid metabolism in biomembranes. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants with different 5′ UTRs have been identified for this gene.
