Target Information
Tmem119 encodes a single-pass type I transmembrane protein interacting with various micro-RNAs and transcription factors such as SMAD1, SMAD5, and RUNX2. It serves as a reliable surface marker of microglia, distinguishing them from infiltrating macrophages. Microglia, restricted to the brain, are involved in debris clearance and neuronal pruning, exhibiting neuroprotective and neurotoxic functions depending on their environment. Reactive microglia co-express Iba1 and are implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and Multiple Sclerosis. Outside the neural system, Tmem119 is associated with osteoblast differentiation and ossification.
