Target Information
Mucin 4 (MUC4) is a membrane-bound mucin transmembrane glycoprotein that protects and lubricates nearly all mucosal surfaces, including bronchioles, corneas, and reproductive tracts.
Abnormal MUC4 expression is observed in various carcinomas and sarcomas, such as fibromyoxoid sarcoma and pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
Immunohistochemical detection of MUC4 is being studied as a potential biomarker for these cancers.
MUC4 mutations have been associated with certain population-specific conditions, including infertility and endometriosis in Taiwanese individuals and gallstone formation in Chinese men.
Because of its key role in mucosal protection, MUC4 dysfunction is often linked to metastatic cancer invasion.
