Target Information
The CD8B antigen is a cell surface glycoprotein found on most cytotoxic T lymphocytes that mediates efficient cell-cell interactions within the immune system. CD8 acts as a coreceptor with the T-cell receptor to recognize antigens presented by APCs in the context of class I MHC molecules. The functional coreceptor can be either a homodimer (alpha chains) or a heterodimer (alpha and beta chains). Both chains show significant homology to immunoglobulin variable light chains. This gene encodes the CD8 beta chain isoforms, with multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct membrane-associated or secreted isoforms. A pseudogene on chromosome 2 has also been identified.
