Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a protein-to-rRNA ratio of approximately 75%. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL44 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein.
