Target Information

Interferon gamma (IFNγ, Type II interferon) is a macrophage activation factor produced mainly by T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells in response to antigens and cytokines. It is a dimeric glycoprotein composed of two 146 amino acid subunits (~45 kDa as a homodimer). IFNγ exhibits species-specific biological activity and does not cross-react between human and mouse. Its functions include antiviral and antiproliferative activity, induction of MHC class I and II, macrophage activation, and enhanced immunoglobulin secretion by B cells. IFNγ acts through IFNγ receptor I and II, activating the JAK-STAT pathway. It shares ~40% sequence homology with mouse IFNγ and is regulated by IL2, FGF basic, EGF, and downregulated by vitamin D3 or DMN. Mutations in the IFNγ gene are associated with aplastic anemia.
