Target Information
Aldh3A1 belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase superfamily, a group of NAD(P)(+)-dependent enzymes that catalyze oxidation of various aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes. It is highly expressed in the stomach and cornea, where it constitutes up to 50% of water-soluble proteins in mammalian corneas. Aldh3A1 protects the cornea from UV-induced oxidative stress through detoxification of reactive aldehydes and direct absorption of UV energy. Studies show that corneas from Aldh3A1-deficient mice appear normal, but double knockout of Aldh3A1 and Aldh1A1 increases cataract formation after UVB exposure, suggesting compensatory roles between these enzymes.
