EPHA8 belongs to the ephrin receptor subfamily of the protein-tyrosine kinase family. These receptors are involved in mediating developmental events, particularly in the nervous system. EPHA8 plays a role in short-range, contact-mediated axonal guidance during mammalian nervous system development.
Receptors in the EPH subfamily typically contain a single kinase domain and an extracellular region with a cysteine-rich domain and two fibronectin type III repeats. Ephrin receptors are classified into two groups based on extracellular domain sequence similarity and ligand-binding affinity for ephrin-A or ephrin-B ligands.
