Target Information

Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin family of receptors. It plays an essential role in T cell signal transduction, differentiation, and activation. CD8 is primarily expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer (CD8α and CD8β), functioning as a co-receptor with the T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules.
CD8α is crucial for MHC-I binding and can also form homodimers on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. Interaction with MHC-I/peptide complexes on antigen-presenting cells recruits Lck kinase, inducing lymphokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs are vital for pathogen and tumor cell clearance, and their differentiation is promoted by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
