Target Information
This gene encodes a homeobox-containing transcription factor homologous to the empty spiracles gene in Drosophila. In humans, EMX2 is expressed in the dorsal telencephalon, olfactory neuroepithelium, and urogenital system. During development, its expression in the dorsal telencephalon follows a low rostral-lateral to high caudal-medial gradient, contributing to neocortex patterning. In olfactory neuroepithelia, EMX2 interacts with eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E), potentially regulating mRNA transport or translation. In the developing urogenital system, EMX2 expression occurs in epithelial tissues and is negatively regulated by HOXA10. Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants encoding distinct proteins.
