Target Information
Constant region of immunoglobulin heavy chains. Immunoglobulins (antibodies) are membrane-bound or secreted glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes.
In the recognition phase of humoral immunity, membrane-bound immunoglobulins act as receptors that, upon binding a specific antigen, trigger clonal expansion and differentiation of B lymphocytes into plasma cells.
Secreted immunoglobulins mediate the effector phase of humoral immunity, eliminating bound antigens. The antigen binding site is formed by the variable domains of one heavy chain and its associated light chain, providing two antigen binding sites per molecule.
Variable domains are assembled through V-(D)-J rearrangement and undergo somatic hypermutation for affinity maturation. Ig alpha is the major immunoglobulin class in body secretions. [UniProt]
