Invitrogen™ CML Latex Beads, 4% w/v, 6 μm

Microspheres (also called latex beads or latex particles) are spherical particles in the colloidal size range formed from an amorphous polymer such as polystyrene. The arrangement of polystyrene chains makes the surface highly hydrophobic, ideal for adsorption of materials such as proteins.

These carboxylate-modified (CML) latex particles are produced by copolymerizing carboxylic acid-containing polymers. The result is a latex polymer particle with a highly charged, relatively hydrophilic, and somewhat “fluffy” surface layer.
CML particles are electrosterically stabilized, safe in electrolyte concentrations up to 1M univalent salt. They are negatively charged with a polyelectrolyte surface character. At pH ∼10, all carboxyl groups are ionized, resulting in a hydrophilic latex.
