Target Information
ASCL1 (also known as ASH1) is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor required for early nervous system development. It is expressed in fetal brain and is essential for autonomic neuron development and survival. ASCL1 interaction with MEF-2A may regulate gene expression critical for neuronal circuit formation. High ASCL1 expression in neuroendocrine tumors (medullary thyroid cancer, small cell lung cancer, and others) makes it a useful marker for cancers with neuroendocrine features. The ASCL1 gene maps to human chromosome 12 and includes a trinucleotide repeat region, suggesting potential involvement in inherited disease.
