ALDH8A1 단백질은 aldehyde dehydrogenase 계열에 속하며, 생체 내 9-cis-retinoic acid 생합성 경로에 관여합니다.
이 효소는 9-cis-retinal을 retinoid X receptor 리간드인 9-cis-retinoic acid로 전환하며, all-trans-retinal보다 약 40배 높은 활성을 보입니다.
이는 9-cis-retinal에 대한 특이적 선호성을 보이는 최초의 aldehyde dehydrogenase로 알려져 있습니다.
두 가지 전사 변이체가 확인되어 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화합니다.
