Target Information
The SURF-1 protein plays a vital role in the assembly of complex IV (CIV or COX) of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. It is expressed in the inner mitochondrial membrane, and mutations in the SURF-1 gene cause cytochrome c oxidase complex IV deficiency. This deficiency leads to Leigh syndrome, a severe neurological disorder characterized by necrotic lesions in subcortical brain regions. SURF-1 mutations are associated with high embryonic lethality and early postnatal mortality, as well as deficits in muscle strength and motor performance. Morphological abnormalities in heart, brain, and skeletal muscle are frequently observed due to SURF-1 mutations.
