Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is associated with HLA Class I antigens and expressed on various cell types, including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes. B2M is also present in free form in plasma. The sequence is homologous to immunoglobulin constant regions, primarily forming a beta-pleated sheet structure. It participates in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and downstream signaling in naive CD8+ cells. The B2M gene is located on chromosome 15, and mutations can lead to hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. B2M levels are useful for monitoring renal function and serve as a prognostic marker for HIV infection.
