Background

Potassium channels represent one of the most complex classes of voltage-gated ion channels, both functionally and structurally. They regulate neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume.
Four sequence-related potassium channel genes—shaker, shaw, shab, and shal—have been identified in Drosophila, each with human homologs.
This gene encodes a member of the voltage-gated, shaker-related potassium channel subfamily. It contains six membrane-spanning domains with a shaker-type repeat in the fourth segment and belongs to the delayed rectifier class, enabling efficient neuronal repolarization after an action potential. Kv1.3 plays an essential role in T-cell proliferation.
