Background
Integrins are heterodimeric proteins composed of alpha and beta subunits. At least 18 alpha and 8 beta subunits are known in mammals. Integrin family members function as membrane receptors involved in cell adhesion and recognition processes such as embryogenesis, hemostasis, tissue repair, immune response, and tumor metastasis. This gene encodes a beta subunit, and multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants producing different isoforms have been identified (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
