| Background | The ApoE protein is a major apoprotein of chylomicrons, binding to specific liver and peripheral cell receptors. It is essential for normal catabolism of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. The gene is located on chromosome 19, near apolipoprotein C1 and C2 genes. Mutations cause familial dysbetalipoproteinemia (type III hyperlipoproteinemia), characterized by increased plasma cholesterol and triglycerides due to impaired clearance of chylomicron and VLDL remnants. |
