Background
This gene encodes a protein belonging to a family of apoptotic suppressor proteins. Members share a conserved baculovirus IAP repeat motif essential for anti-apoptotic function. XIAP binds TRAF1 and TRAF2, inhibiting apoptosis induced by free radicals and interleukin 1-beta converting enzyme. It also inhibits caspase-3 and caspase-7, key enzymes in cell death pathways. Mutations cause X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome. Alternate splicing yields multiple transcript variants, and pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 2 and 11. [RefSeq, Feb 2011]
