Background
Histones are basic nuclear proteins that form the nucleosome structure of chromosomal fiber in eukaryotes. Nucleosomes consist of approximately 146 bp of DNA wrapped around a histone octamer composed of pairs of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. The chromatin fiber is further compacted through the interaction of linker histone H1 with DNA between nucleosomes to form higher-order structures. This gene encodes a replication-independent member of the histone H2A family, distinct from other family members. Studies in mice indicate that functional H2A is essential for embryonic development, and its absence leads to embryonic lethality. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
