Background

Histones are basic nuclear proteins responsible for nucleosome structure of the chromosomal fiber in eukaryotes. Two molecules each of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 form an octamer around which ~146 bp of DNA is wrapped, creating nucleosomes. The linker histone H1 interacts with linker DNA between nucleosomes, aiding in chromatin compaction into higher-order structures. This gene, located on chromosome 6p22–p21.3, is intronless and encodes a replication-dependent histone H1 family member. Transcripts lack polyA tails but contain a palindromic termination element.
