Background
Glutamate metabotropic receptor 1 (GRM1) is a metabotropic glutamate receptor that activates phospholipase C. L-glutamate, the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, activates both ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptors. Glutamatergic neurotransmission is involved in most aspects of normal brain function and can be disrupted in various neuropathologic conditions. The canonical alpha isoform of the encoded protein forms a disulfide-linked homodimer and functions via a G-protein-coupled phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system. GRM1 may be associated with disease states such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and breast cancer. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. (RefSeq, May 2013)
