Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio (~75%) compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology identification difficult. This gene encodes a protein associated with both the 28S and 39S subunits, and alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 4q, 6p, 6q, 7p, and 15q.
