Background
Glutamate receptors are the predominant excitatory neurotransmitter receptors in the mammalian brain and are activated in various normal neurophysiologic processes. These receptors form heteromeric protein complexes with multiple transmembrane subunits, functioning as ligand-gated ion channels. Classification of glutamate receptors is based on activation by different pharmacologic agonists. This gene belongs to the AMPA receptor family (α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate). Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
