Background
G protein subunit gamma 5 (GNG5) is a component of heterotrimeric G proteins (alpha, beta, gamma) that regulate the transmission of signals from cell surface receptors to intracellular effectors. Upon receptor activation, GTP replaces GDP on the alpha subunit, causing dissociation of the alpha-GTP complex from the beta-gamma dimer. These subunits subsequently interact with and regulate various effector molecules (Gilman, 1987; Ahmad et al., 1995; supplied by OMIM, Nov 2010).
