Background
Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily G member 2 (OR8G2) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response leading to the perception of smell. These receptors are members of the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) arising from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for the recognition and G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature assigned to olfactory receptor genes and proteins is species-specific (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
