PNPT1은 RNA 결합 단백질로, 다양한 RNA 대사 과정에 관여합니다. 단일가닥 polyribonucleotide의 3'-to-5' 방향 인산분해를 촉매하며, 미토콘드리아 degradosome (mtEXO) 복합체의 구성 요소로 작용하여 ATP 의존적으로 3' overhang 이중가닥 RNA를 분해합니다.
이 단백질은 미토콘드리아 mRNA의 가공 및 polyadenylation에 필요하며, 세포질 RNA 수입, 미토콘드리아 형태 및 호흡 조절, 전자전달계 발현 조절, 특정 miRNA 안정성 유지 등에 관여합니다.
PNPT1 유전자의 돌연변이는 COXPD13 (Combined Oxidative Phosphorylation Deficiency 13) 및 DFNB70 (Deafness, Autosomal Recessive, 70)와 관련이 있습니다.
