Target Information
Chromosome 9 consists of about 145 million bases and represents approximately 4% of the human genome, encoding nearly 900 genes. It is considered to play a role in gender determination; deletion of the distal portion of 9p can lead to male-to-female sex reversal in individuals with an X,Y genotype. Chromosome 9 also includes genes associated with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (ENG) and familial dysautonomia (IKBKAP). Additionally, it contains the largest interferon family gene cluster. A translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22 produces the BCR-ABL fusion protein commonly found in leukemias.
