Target Information
Calpains are a well-conserved family of calcium-dependent cysteine proteases. These proteins are heterodimers composed of an invariant small subunit and variable large subunits. The large subunit contains a cysteine protease domain, and both subunits have calcium-binding domains. Calpains are implicated in neurodegenerative processes, as their activation can be induced by calcium influx and oxidative stress.
Calpain 9 is predominantly expressed in the stomach and small intestine, suggesting specialized digestive functions, and has been associated with gastric cancer. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
