Target Information
HOX homeobox genes play a role in early stem cell function and hematopoietic differentiation. HOXB4 is a homeotic selector gene involved in self-renewal of definitive hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Expression of HOXB4 in primitive progenitors combined with culture on hematopoietic stroma induces a switch to the definitive HSC phenotype. Activation of WNT signaling in HSCs increases HOXB4 expression, and perturbations of HOX gene expression can lead to leukemia.
