PAX6 유전자는 Drosophila melanogaster의 prd 유전자의 인간 상동체 중 하나인 paired box gene 6을 인코딩합니다. 이 유전자는 보존된 paired box 도메인과 homeo box 도메인을 포함하며, 두 도메인은 DNA 결합 및 전사 조절 기능을 가집니다. PAX6는 신경계와 안구 발달 과정에서 발현되며, 돌연변이는 aniridia 및 Peter’s anomaly와 같은 안구 질환을 유발할 수 있습니다. 대체 스플라이싱을 통해 동일하거나 다른 아이소폼을 인코딩하는 전사 변이체가 존재합니다.
