Target Information
Laminins, a family of extracellular matrix glycoproteins, are the major noncollagenous constituent of basement membranes. They play key roles in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminin effects are mediated through cell surface receptors, including integrins and non-integrin laminin-binding proteins.
This gene encodes a high-affinity, non-integrin laminin receptor 1 (67 kD laminin receptor, 37 kD laminin receptor precursor, or p40 ribosome-associated protein). The amino acid sequence is highly conserved across species, indicating its essential biological function. Elevated expression of this receptor has been observed in colon carcinoma and lung cancer cells, correlating with invasive and metastatic phenotypes. Multiple pseudogene copies exist due to retropositional events, and two alternatively spliced transcript variants encode the same protein.
