Target Information
Chromosome 9 consists of about 145 million bases and represents approximately 4% of the human genome, encoding nearly 900 genes. It is considered to play a role in gender determination, and deletion of the distal portion of 9p can lead to male-to-female sex reversal. Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, associated with harmful vascular defects, involves the chromosome 9 gene encoding endoglin protein (ENG). Familial dysautonomia is linked to chromosome 9 through the gene IKBKAP. Chromosome 9 also includes the largest interferon family gene cluster and is involved in the translocation with chromosome 22 leading to the BCR-ABL fusion protein found in leukemias. The C9orf71 gene product has been provisionally designated C9orf71 pending further characterization.
